Today is “World Health Day,” and the theme is “Protecting Health in Times of Crisis.” We know that health is wealth, but nowhere is this more true than in times of crisis. Protecting one’s health becomes a top priority during a pandemic, natural disaster, or conflict. But what exactly does it mean to protect one’s health during a crisis, and why is it so critical?

First and foremost, protecting one’s health during a crisis requires being proactive rather than reactive. It entails investing in healthcare infrastructure, training healthcare workers, and constructing disease surveillance systems before a crisis occurs. It entails making sure that there is enough medical equipment, medicines, and supplies on hand in case of an emergency. By being proactive, we can reduce the impact of a crisis on the health of individuals and communities.

Addressing health inequalities is also critical. During a crisis, the most vulnerable members of society are frequently hit the hardest. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for example, we saw how the virus disproportionately impacted marginalized communities, such as the poor, people of color, and those with underlying health conditions. Protecting health in times of crisis entails ensuring that everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, race, or ethnicity, has access to essential health services.

At the same time, healthy behaviors and lifestyles must be promoted. Taking care of one’s physical and mental health is more important than ever during a crisis. This includes regular exercise, a healthy diet, adequate sleep, and stress management techniques. It also includes abstaining from harmful substances such as tobacco and alcohol.

Health protection requires a collective effort. It is not just the responsibility of healthcare workers or policymakers; it is the responsibility of all of us. We can all take steps to protect our health and the health of those around us.

As we continue to celebrate, let us remember that by promoting healthy lifestyles and behaviors, we can build our own resilience and support the resilience of our communities.
